GDP growth in 2016 slightly exceeded forecasts by the Department of Finance and the Economy of the Basque Government

The gross domestic product (GDP) generated by the Basque economy in the fourth quarter of 2016 grew 0.6% compared to that generated in the third quarter of the year, matching the pace of the previous period. This sustained quarterly growth also points to significant progress in the GDP in the coming quarters.

Quarterly and annual GDP growth exceeded all of the forecasts published by the Department of Finance and the Economy by a tenth. Compared to forecast of growth of 2.8%, the growth in the quarterly accounts showed an increase of 2.9%. Similarly, the average growth for the year was 3.1%, a tenth above the forecast by the Department of Finance and the Economy (3.0%) and two-tenths above the previous year.

The upwards revisions have been a constant throughout the year, as in March a growth of 2.5% was expected for the whole of 2016, in October 2.9% and in November the aforementioned 3.0%, figures which have all been exceeded by the real data (3.1%). Therefore, the Basque economy has shown higher inertia than that forecast, within a quarterly process of moderation in the evolution of the rates.
