The German city of Dresden agrees to dedicate a city to the victims of the bombing of Gernika
Spokespersons of the Greens argued for the proposal as part of the gathering and uniting forces and approaches to support peace within the common European framework, as their spokesperson, Christiane Filius-Jehne, explained. It seems that the initiative will prosper this time, even though it lacks unanimity, as last week's vote was supported by the Left, the Greens and the SPD (the municipal majority supporting the Mayor) and opposed by the CDU, FDP-Free Citizens and AFD.
The matter of the graphics was also discussed, as the green proposal includes the current name of Gernika (using the Basque version), and the street would therefore be Gernikastrasse, rather than the earlier versions, that are no longer official, which are reflected in the title of Pablo Picasso's famous painting.
It should be noted that the capital of Saxony, which today is home to over half a million inhabitants, affected by a terrible and devastating bombing by the allies during World War II.
The German capital, Berlin, has a square dedicated to Gernika, the Guernica-Platz (sic), and Gernika is also the name of the city's euskal etxea, the centre used by German Basque speakers and who are aware of the key role that the Luftwaffe and its Condor Legion played in the destruction of the Basque charter city.
