East Timor is 15,000 square kilometres in area and has just over one million inhabitants. There is an eight-hour time difference between Brussels or the Basque Country and that territory.   The mission is in response to an invitation from the government and is part of the tradition of supporting the democratic evolution of this new state since the first electoral observation mission was sent in 1999 and which raised great interest in the local media.
