GDP growth in 2016 slightly exceeded forecasts by the Department of Finance and the Economy of the Basque Government

The gross domestic product (GDP) generated by the Basque economy in the fourth quarter of 2016 grew 0.6% compared to that generated in the third quarter of the year, matching the pace of the previous period. This sustained quarterly growth also points to significant progress in the GDP in the coming quarters.

EAJ-PNV sees it as being "unacceptable" to prosecute the Catalan referendum

Representatives of the Basque Nationalist Party and EHBildu joined gatherings organised by Gure Esku Dago in Bilbao, San Sebastian, Vitoria and Pamplona to express their support for the Catalan political officials who have been tried for the 9-N pro-independence reference. A thousand people supported the events held in the four capitals of the southern Basque Country to launch a united message. "The future of the people is decided at the ballot box and not in the courts," they proclaimed, on a day on which they reminded everyone that the former President of the Generalitat, Artur Mas, and the ex-ministers Joana Ortega and Irene Rigau, are sitting in the dock only for having given a "channel to the democratic mandate" of the people of Catalonia.

Iparralde constitutes its first own institutional structure

The Mayor of Bayonne, Jean René Etchegaray, has been appointed the first President of the Municipal Community of Iparralde, the new institution of the northern Basque Country. Etchegaray, who has spent years calling for the creation of a Basque institution, got 73.4% of the votes. During the inauguration, the first President of the Community proposed by the French Government explained that Iparralde is entering a transition phase and that the work has only just begun.

Urkullu attends the opening of a columbarium in Elgoibar to "honour the memory and dignify the example of those who gave their lives in defence of democracy and freedom"

The Lehendakari, Iñigo Urkullu, opened the Columbario de la Dignidad (Columbarium of Dignity) which houses the remains of 27 people. This space will serve to "keep and honour their memory and pay tribute to their example" said the Lehendakari, after explaining that many of them "gave their lives in defence of democracy and freedom". The Columbario de la Dignidad is located near the cemetery of Olaso in Elgoibar.

Martin Berasategui and Enko Atxa received awards for the best restaurants in the world for the second consecutive year, according to TripAdvisor travellers. The Travellers’ Choice Awards for Restaurants 2016 recognised a total of 10 Spanish haute cuisine restaurants, 5 of which obtained awards at a European level and three worldwide.
